There were many things going on in the days leading up to Halloween…
First, Hunter built a “Haunted House” at preschool (Hunter is wearing her brother’s hat and vest…):

Then there was the Halloween Party at preschool:

Magnus went to the party too:

And Cousin Sydney’s birthday trick-or-treat party:

Magnus and his cousin Charlie:
All in all, a good, busy Halloween.

Last week sometime, Hunter and I were sitting in the family room. I was working on something for school and she was playing with her magnetic writing pad. Apparently she was practicing her letters. This is actually a picture of the second ‘H’ she had ever written. She erased the first one before I could get the camera, but quickly wrote another one at my request.
Hunter really loves preschool. She comes home with new songs and can recognize most of her letters and tell us what each letter “says”. Her counting skills are improving too.
Some funny things she’s been doing:
According to her preschool teacher, Hunter refuses to partake of any art projects that do not coordinate with her clothing.
She also turned a ‘monster-mash’ dance activity at school into a boy-girl couples dance. (The princess thing is really getting out of hand…)
And then there was the day she was sitting in her chair singing the welcome song from school. It goes something like this: “(name), (name), (name)’s here, we’re so happy (name)’s here.”
Hunter was running through the different names, Ari, Chloe, etc. And then I heard her sing, “Stupid, stupid, stupid’s here, we’re so happy stupid’s here.”
The things they pick up…

We celebrated Hunter’s birthday by going to Disneyland. Auntie Janice, Uncle Charles, cousin Sydney, and our friends Elaine, Rachel, and Zach Foytik went with us.
Check out these cute little girls:

Uncle Charles took this picture, and while it’s out of focus, I still like it:

One of the advantages of being a giant child is that Hunter was able to ride most of the rides, including the Matterhorn, and her favorite, Splash Mountain. We love Disneyland.

Hunter had a big birthday week… filled with cakes…

…and presents…
…most with a decidedly princess theme…

Our little girl is three years old and she had a very happy birthday.

Turns out one small tooth is enough to cause quite a bit of bleeding in your mouth when your sister pushes your face into the tile.
Let the bloodletting begin!

Last weekend we enjoyed what may have been the last weekend of our California summer. Hunter and Griffin enjoyed the sprinkler (Griffin so much that the sprinkler is now dead…).

Hunter enjoyed pouring water on her brother; Magnus enjoyed it less so. And Griffin wanted to play in the paddling pool too.

The first of many happy summers is on the books… it all seems to be going so fast. Too fast.

First Day of Preschool
Last Tuesday Hunter went to her first day of preschool. It’s more of a pre-preschool (all of the children in the class are a good two years out from kindergarten) and it’s an in-home class run by a former kindergarten teacher. This teacher is the wife of the guy I work with whose parents babysat his daughter Chloe and Hunter when they were babies.
It’s a really great program, all California State Standards based, and honestly, I’ve never seen so many lessons conducted around an apple theme before. And the best part… Hunter loves it. Sure she knew most of her colors and shapes and a few letters and numbers before starting, but now she’s really into it. I have to record for posterity the fact that my daughter has been insisting on doing her “homework” the last couple of days. She doesn’t really possess the fine motor skills necessary to write letters, but she wields a mean gluestick… check out her apple crown:

Of course Hunter has been telling us for sometime that she is “too old for daycare” (she’s not quite three) and that “[she] poop[s] in the potty so [she] should get to go to school!”
Next stop: college!

So I decided that Hunter needed to have a feather boa for her dress-up collection. Of course, she doesn’t seem to understand that the feather boa is more of an accessory than, oh, say, an article of clothing.
Later this same day, the four of us were out in the living room playing “Princess”. Have I ever mentioned that “Princess” is one of Hunter’s favorite games? She usually plays the princess (obviously) and insists that Papa plays the prince or sometimes the “horsey”. (I am usually relegated to the role of the dragon or Maleficent…)
The game goes like this: Hunter dresses up in one of her princess dresses, her princess slippers, and tells her Papa, a.k.a. the prince, to “kiss me up.” She then lays down in one of the living room chairs, pretends to close her eyes, and waits for her prince to come kiss her. Sometimes I chase them, yelling things like “Rrrarrrr!”
Anyway. The other night we were in the living room and Hunter wanted to play “Princess” (no princess dress this time, just the feather boa and her princess slippers…), but we weren’t really cooperating with her. I kept telling her that I didn’t want to be the dragon, I wanted to be the princess. Hunter began to get upset, finally declaring, “I’m the Princess! I’m the one with the slippers!”
That kid is the guts.
This morning started early. Magnus was coughing before four o’clock. Not fussing, just coughing. One quiet little cough at a time. We gave him some water; it seemed to help.
Michael left for work a little after four o’clock. I’m not sure exactly what time. I don’t sleep well when Michael isn’t home. I got out of bed around five o’clock and enjoyed about an hour of relative peace as I readied myself for work.
Then Hunter woke up. She seemed like she was in a good enough mood, but things deteriorated quickly. It started when I took off her “Princess Dress” nightgown. To punish me for doing such a thing she stood in front of the toilet and peed, rather than oh, say, climbing on the thing first. This is the second morning in a row that she has peed on the floor. (Yesterday wasn’t willful… there was an accident with the potty chair falling into the potty…) Love potty training.
Anyway. About this time the screaming started and it didn’t stop for forty-five minutes. Do you know how loud screaming can be in a small space like, oh, say, a bathroom? My ears are still ringing. Hunter didn’t like her outfit, didn’t want me to comb her hair, wanted to stay home, wanted her binky, wanted to take her blanket and pillow into brother’s room and then rearrange his furniture to make room for her to spread out her blanket. What else? Wanted juice, didn’t want juice, wanted to go back to bed, didn’t want to go downstairs, didn’t want to put on her shoes, had an “owie” (her knee, it’s always her knee…), wanted to snuggle.
Magnus would not eat with such a ruckus, and then, best part: he started crying too. And why not? Everyone else was doing it…
So much fun. So much fun.
