Magnus has decided that standing up isn’t such a bad idea…

There were many things going on in the days leading up to Halloween…
First, Hunter built a “Haunted House” at preschool (Hunter is wearing her brother’s hat and vest…):

Then there was the Halloween Party at preschool:

Magnus went to the party too:

And Cousin Sydney’s birthday trick-or-treat party:

Magnus and his cousin Charlie:
All in all, a good, busy Halloween.
This has been quite the month for our little boy. Magnus is growing like a weed, measuring 32.5 inches long and weighing 24 pounds and literally doing something new every day. He tears around the house after his sister, any unattended shoes, and his favorite, the cat water dish. He isn’t terribly interested in standing yet, probably because he can sit up on his knees and reach pretty much everything he wants to get to that’s sitting on the couch or the coffee table.
Magnus has also been sampling all manner of “real” foods this month, and even though he only has one little tooth, he’s getting the hang of chewing. Magnus has also decided that he likes his food to have flavor. In fact, he’s to the point where he pretty much refuses to eat any of the baby food dinners that he used to like before. He’s also getting quite good at feeding himself but he’ll still allow us to feed him (unlike his sister at this age…). So far the food he seems to like the best is spaghetti with tomato sauce.
One of the biggest changes this month is that Magnus is no longer going to daycare. We’ve hired a nanny to stay home with the kids and make sure they’re getting the attention (and the naps…) that they need. So far it’s working out great. Magnus is also done with his corrective helmet. Watching him now it’s hard to believe that he used to like to lay in one spot so often. In fact, he’s developed a rather annoying habit of refusing to lay on his back at all… especially during diaper changes. And he’s so strong… it takes real effort to hold him still these days.

Turns out one small tooth is enough to cause quite a bit of bleeding in your mouth when your sister pushes your face into the tile.
Let the bloodletting begin!

Here is Magnus enjoying his first taste of yogurt. He really did enjoy it, opening his mouth like a baby bird for each bite until the container was gone. He never eats like that. And here is his first bite of egg:

He made a pretty funny face every time he took a bite of egg, but he kept eating it anyway. Ah, the joys of table food. So much good stuff on the horizon.

Last weekend we enjoyed what may have been the last weekend of our California summer. Hunter and Griffin enjoyed the sprinkler (Griffin so much that the sprinkler is now dead…).

Hunter enjoyed pouring water on her brother; Magnus enjoyed it less so. And Griffin wanted to play in the paddling pool too.

The first of many happy summers is on the books… it all seems to be going so fast. Too fast.

Magnus had his nine month check-up today. He weighed in at 24.2 pounds (90th percentile) and measured 32.5 inches (98th percentile). Two pounds heavier and two inches longer than his sister at the same age. Magnus is not anemic, can now eat all the table food he wants, and cried (screamed, really) from the moment he got his shots until the moment we left the building.
Shots are always a terrible thing. The baby is so good and happy and friendly, then we reward this behavior by stabbing him in the leg with giant needles, repeatedly. Some day I’m going to make his dad take him to the shot appointment…
This has been a very big month. After months of not doing much besides eating, sleeping, and smiling, Magnus has finally decided to exert himself. He has been sitting like a pro for a while, but now he pitches himself forward to roll around on the floor, pushes himself onto all fours or back to the seated position, and has even been coaxed into crawling toward his cheering mother and sister or more importantly, after a wayward binky.
Magnus is pretty much over breastmilk, preferring to eat solid foods instead, and is becoming quite good at feeding himself little finger foods. (Always with his left hand… yay!) He has also mastered binky replacement and is pretty good at drinking out of his sippy cups. He also tasted his first puppy at Aunt She-she’s house just last weekend.
Magnus is becoming more verbal… he says ”Mamama” and “Dadada” and “blahblahblah” for Momma, Papa, and Hunter, respectively, and he does this sort of high-pitched sigh of a squeal that is freaking adorable. Magnus has been a really good sport about wearing his skull correction helmet and he’ll probably only have to do so for about another month.
Some of Magnus’s favorite things this month include his yellow Little People bus, taking baths with his sister, and being carried around Superman style. It is so amazing to watch him as he explores his little world… that kid gets a kick out of everything.
It is official:
Magnus has said his first word and that first word was “Momma”.
Granted, he has been messing around with the ma-ma-ma-ma sound for a while now and before that it was the blah-blah-blah sound and the da-da-da sound.
But last night… last night Michael was feeding Magnus dinner and I was looking in the pantry for something. (Seriously, once I’d opened the door, I had forgotten what it was…) And I hear my son say, plain as day, “Momma.” I looked up to see him leaning away from his dinner, over the side of his high-chair, staring right at me.
That kid has the best smile…

Last night Magnus had his first big boy bath.
As you can see, he was thrilled about it.
The first thing he tried to do was pitch himself face first into the water. Imagine his surprise when he found that the bottom of the tub was actually full of water. He rolled with it though and was quite content to lay on his back in three inches of water while his momma washed him from head to toe.
Next up: a bath with his sister.
Ha.
