The morning of Thanksgiving 2009, Magnus received his first hair cut.  I do not believe that he cared too terribly much for the experience.  Hunter’s first haircut was an exotic trip to the hair salon…  we just plopped Magnus in the sink and his sexy, shirtless Papa when after him the clippers.

Handsome little devil…

So many new and exciting things to report this month…  where to begin?  Mostly this month can be summed up in one word: busy.  Magnus is busy crawling all over the house, pulling himself up to standing, opening every door, drawer, and cabinet he can get his hands on, and, engaging in his absolute favorite activity:  pushing things around on the floor.

It started with a flipped over piece of Tupperware, but he has since graduated to balls, chairs, and even his high chair.  He’s so focused on pushing things across the floor that he’ll often bump into other, immovable things (walls, people, the cat tower, etc…) head first, two or three times (?!) before bothering to look up and see what’s in his way.  Then, he generally gets angry.

Magnus has also been busy mastering the art of feeding himself.  Despite the fact that his second tooth has barely begun to make an appearance, Magnus is eating almost everything that we are.  His favorites so far seem to be grilled cheese sandwiches (he ate a whole one the other day!) and pan-fried chicken breast.  Of course he also loves his Gerber puffs and meat sticks, but he is beginning to suspect that those are not the best of the available offerings.  Magnus is also quite adept at using the sippy cup, and has just recently discovered the joys of snacking in the car.

Magnus’s newfound mobility has encouraged him to explore his world, and he loves to wander off into the other room to play by himself with his sister’s doll house.  Or in his momma’s desk that his sister so kindly showed him how to access.  He still enjoys following Hunter around and he beats on the door whenever Hunter closes him out of the bathroom while she does her business.

In fact, keeping Magnus out of the bathroom, or the ‘fun chamber’ as he thinks of it, has become a bit of a challenge…  He knows that behind the closed bathroom door lays a virtual smorgasbord of highly diverting activities.  He loves to pluck things from the trashcan, unroll entire rolls of toilet paper, and beat on the closed lid of the toilet.  To say nothing of his affinity for baths…  That kid loves baths (read: splashing…).  Yes, Magnus generally cries when he is denied entry to the bathroom.

Magnus is also quite fond of the pets.  He loves to chase after the kitty and run his hands along the Jackson’s smooth black fur.  He’s usually quite gentle and Jack tolerates the attention.  (Any attention is good attention, after all…)  Magnus also enjoys climbing and/or beating on Griffin, which is all right because Griffin enjoys licking and/or chewing on him.  Magnus also enjoys playing with Griffin while he’s outside swinging on his swing, except when Griffin does his impersonation of a wall and stops all forward progress of the swing.

Magnus loves to be outside, and sometimes he’ll actually stand at the door and cry to be taken out.  He’s not all that interested in crawling around out there yet, especially after the digger he took in our friends the Foytiks’ driveway, but maybe his desire to be outdoors will motivate him to improve his walking skills.

Our little boy is almost a year old…  who knows what the next month will bring…?

Jub loves the tub

Magnus loves, loves, loves, taking baths.

Of course, if we put too much water in the tub, we may as well take a bath with him because he splashes like nobody’s business.  Seriously.  Can’t get him to stop.  Even when his sister is there to distract him, he’d still rather splash.  Toys hold his interest for a little while, especially the foam letters that stick to the sides of the tub, but mostly, he just wants to splash.

He’s so cute…

Magnus has decided that standing up isn’t such a bad idea…

Crusing

There were many things going on in the days leading up to Halloween…

First, Hunter built a “Haunted House” at preschool (Hunter is wearing her brother’s hat and vest…):

Then there was the Halloween Party at preschool:

Magnus went to the party too:

And Cousin Sydney’s birthday trick-or-treat party:

Magnus and Weird AlAll in all, a good, busy Halloween.

Magnus Glenn is Ten Months OldThis has been quite the month for our little boy.  Magnus is growing like a weed, measuring 32.5 inches long and weighing 24 pounds and literally doing something new every day.  He tears around the house after his sister, any unattended shoes, and his favorite, the cat water dish.  He isn’t terribly interested in standing yet, probably because he can sit up on his knees and reach pretty much everything he wants to get to that’s sitting on the couch or the coffee table.

Magnus has also been sampling all manner of “real” foods this month, and even though he only has one little tooth, he’s getting the hang of chewing.  Magnus has also decided that he likes his food to have flavor.  In fact, he’s to the point where he pretty much refuses to eat any of the baby food dinners that he used to like before.  He’s also getting quite good at feeding himself but he’ll still allow us to feed him (unlike his sister at this age…).  So far the food he seems to like the best is spaghetti with tomato sauce.

One of the biggest changes this month is that Magnus is no longer going to daycare.  We’ve hired a nanny to stay home with the kids and make sure they’re getting the attention (and the naps…) that they need.  So far it’s working out great.  Magnus is also done with his corrective helmet.  Watching him now it’s hard to believe that he used to like to lay in one spot so often.  In fact, he’s developed a rather annoying habit of refusing to lay on his back at all… especially during diaper changes.  And he’s so strong… it takes real effort to hold him still these days.

Hunter and Magnus

Turns out one small tooth is enough to cause quite a bit of bleeding in your mouth when your sister pushes your face into the tile.

Let the bloodletting begin!

MGH - first taste of yogurt

Here is Magnus enjoying his first taste of yogurt.  He really did enjoy it, opening his mouth like a baby bird for each bite until the container was gone.  He never eats like that.  And here is his first bite of egg:

He made a pretty funny face every time he took a bite of egg, but he kept eating it anyway.  Ah, the joys of table food.  So much good stuff on the horizon.

A girl and her dog

Last weekend we enjoyed what may have been the last weekend of our California summer.  Hunter and Griffin enjoyed the sprinkler (Griffin so much that the sprinkler is now dead…).

Hunter with brother and bucket

Hunter enjoyed pouring water on her brother; Magnus enjoyed it less so.  And Griffin wanted to play in the paddling pool too.

The first of many happy summers is on the books…  it all seems to be going so fast.  Too fast.

Big Happy Boy

Magnus had his nine month check-up today.  He weighed in at 24.2 pounds (90th percentile) and measured 32.5 inches (98th percentile).  Two pounds heavier and two inches longer than his sister at the same age.  Magnus is not anemic, can now eat all the table food he wants, and cried (screamed, really) from the moment he got his shots until the moment we left the building.

Shots are always a terrible thing.  The baby is so good and happy and friendly, then we reward this behavior by stabbing him in the leg with giant needles, repeatedly.  Some day I’m going to make his dad take him to the shot appointment…
