Hunter and Magnus

Turns out one small tooth is enough to cause quite a bit of bleeding in your mouth when your sister pushes your face into the tile.

Let the bloodletting begin!

MGH - first taste of yogurt

Here is Magnus enjoying his first taste of yogurt.  He really did enjoy it, opening his mouth like a baby bird for each bite until the container was gone.  He never eats like that.  And here is his first bite of egg:

He made a pretty funny face every time he took a bite of egg, but he kept eating it anyway.  Ah, the joys of table food.  So much good stuff on the horizon.

A girl and her dog

Last weekend we enjoyed what may have been the last weekend of our California summer.  Hunter and Griffin enjoyed the sprinkler (Griffin so much that the sprinkler is now dead…).

Hunter enjoyed pouring water on her brother; Magnus enjoyed it less so.  And Griffin wanted to play in the paddling pool too.

The first of many happy summers is on the books…  it all seems to be going so fast.  Too fast.

Big Happy Boy

Magnus had his nine month check-up today.  He weighed in at 24.2 pounds (90th percentile) and measured 32.5 inches (98th percentile).  Two pounds heavier and two inches longer than his sister at the same age.  Magnus is not anemic, can now eat all the table food he wants, and cried (screamed, really) from the moment he got his shots until the moment we left the building.

Shots are always a terrible thing.  The baby is so good and happy and friendly, then we reward this behavior by stabbing him in the leg with giant needles, repeatedly.  Some day I’m going to make his dad take him to the shot appointment…

First Day of Preschool

First Day of Preschool

Last Tuesday Hunter went to her first day of preschool.  It’s more of a pre-preschool (all of the children in the class are a good two years out from kindergarten) and it’s an in-home class run by a former kindergarten teacher.  This teacher is the wife of the guy I work with whose parents babysat his daughter Chloe and Hunter when they were babies.

It’s a really great program, all California State Standards based, and honestly, I’ve never seen so many lessons conducted around an apple theme before.  And the best part…  Hunter loves it.  Sure she knew most of her colors and shapes and a few letters and numbers before starting, but now she’s really into it.  I have to record for posterity the fact that my daughter has been insisting on doing her “homework” the last couple of days.  She doesn’t really possess the fine motor skills necessary to write letters, but she wields a mean gluestick…  check out her apple crown:

Of course Hunter has been telling us for sometime that she is “too old for daycare” (she’s not quite three) and that “[she] poop[s] in the potty so [she] should get to go to school!”

Next stop: college!

This has been a very big month.  After months of not doing much besides eating, sleeping, and smiling, Magnus has finally decided to exert himself.  He has been sitting like a pro for a while, but now he pitches himself forward to roll around on the floor, pushes himself onto all fours or back to the seated position, and has even been coaxed into crawling toward his cheering mother and sister or more importantly, after a wayward binky.

Magnus is pretty much over breastmilk, preferring to eat solid foods instead, and is becoming quite good at feeding himself little finger foods.  (Always with his left hand…  yay!)  He has also mastered binky replacement and is pretty good at drinking out of his sippy cups.  He also tasted his first puppy at Aunt She-she’s house just last weekend.

Magnus is becoming more verbal…  he says ”Mamama” and “Dadada” and “blahblahblah” for Momma, Papa, and Hunter, respectively, and he does this sort of high-pitched sigh of a squeal that is freaking adorable.  Magnus has been a really good sport about wearing his skull correction helmet and he’ll probably only have to do so for about another month.

Some of Magnus’s favorite things this month include his yellow Little People bus, taking baths with his sister, and being carried around Superman style.  It is so amazing to watch him as he explores his little world…  that kid gets a kick out of everything.

Apparently behaving like a lunatic is not enough to get one excused from jury duty.

Yay.

Tonight Michael and I had the little neighbor girl sit in our house while we went for a nice little trail run.  Our neighbor is in eighth grade and it was her first real babysitting gig…  of course Magnus and Hunter were in bed before she arrived, but that still counts, right?

Best money we’ve spent in a long time.

Maggie

Our little Maggie…  She wasn’t the smartest dog, or the cutest, but she was loyal.  Sure she liked to chew her way through chain-link fences, but it was only so she could wait for Michael by the front door.  And sure, she ran away sometimes, but she always came back.

She loved Nala (even though Nala sent her to the vet more than once), was willing to snuggle with the cat, and was the fearless protector of the vacuum cleaner.  She didn’t really care for kids, but she endured Hunter’s attentions with forbearance and may have even enjoyed being covered with cloth napkins and dish towels.

When we took Maggie for walks, she was always game to try and attack other dogs and stopped to pee on everything, even after her bladder was completely empty.  She would sit next to you for as long as you were willing to pet her.

Maggie was a good girl.  We miss her.

Maggie has been failing.  She’s been having trouble getting up.  She’s been having trouble walking.  Last night she sat down to eat her dinner.  She’s never done that before.  We also noticed last night that her right foreleg was swollen from her shoulder to her toes.

This morning Maggie went to work with Michael.  She will visit the veterinarian today and she may or may not be coming home.
